What is LUT
A LUT, or look-up table, is a color correspondence table that changes the colors in an image and is often used in video editing. In film and graphics processing, LUTs can be used for photo retouching. Using a LUT saves time and quickly creates a consistent look and color to an image.
When work is exported through a LUT, it displays different colors, somewhat similar to filters in some image processing software (but with different algorithmic logic).
LUT can be divided into 1D LUT and 3D LUT, so what is the difference between the two?
One-dimensional LUTs are great for setting contrast, detecting white spots on a monitor, or making overall color balance adjustments. However, in the field of color grading, where the complexity and precision of colors need to be expressed, 1D LUT is still insufficient.
Generally speaking, 3D LUTs can realize the functions that 1D LUTs can realize, but not vice versa. Therefore, the industry prefers to use 3D LUT, which has a wider range of application scenarios.
